Sputter Erosion Model of Arcing Contact Materials
نویسندگان
چکیده
The sputter erosion of arcing contacts is a very complex phenomenon, which is determined by the interaction between electromagnetic force, heat conduction and surface tension of liquid metal. A new model for evaluating the sputter erosion of electrodes is described in this paper, which is based on the electromagnetic forces against the molten pool, flowing velocity, kinetic energy and the surface tension of the molten pool. Erosion tests on AgSnO2, AgNi10 and AgNi0.15 contacts under the loads of resistance, lamp and inductance respectively at 14 VDC have been carried out. Experimental results indicate good agreement with the model’s simulation. The model shows how the current and density, specific heat and other parameters of material affect the erosion rate. key words: arcing contact, sputter erosion, material property

Spectroscopic On-Line Monitoring of Cu/W Contacts Erosion in HVCBs Using Optical-Fibre Based Sensor and Chromatic Methodology
Contact erosion is one of the most crucial factors affecting the electrical service lifetime of high-voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs). On-line monitoring the contacts' erosion degree is increasingly in demand for the sake of condition based maintenance to guarantee the functional operation of HVCBs. A spectroscopic monitoring system has been designed based upon a commercial 245 kV/40 kA S F 6 l...
متن کاملEffects of Arcing in Air on the Microstructure, Morphology and Photoelectric Work Function of Ag- Ni (60/40) Contact Materials
The present work aims to throw light on the effects of arcing in air on the surface state of contact pastilles made of silvernickel Ag-Ni (60/40). Also, the photoelectric emission from these electrical contacts has been investigated in the spectral range of 196256 nm. In order to study the effects of arcing on the EWF, the metallic samples were subjected to electrical arcs in air, at atmospheri...
متن کاملPhysics of arcing, and implications to sputter deposition
Arc and glow discharges are defined based on their cathode processes. Arcs are characterized by collective electron emission, which can be stationary with hot cathodes (thermionic arcs), or nonstationary with cold cathodes (cathodic arcs). A brief review on cathodic arc properties serves as the starting point to better understand arcing phenomena in sputtering. Although arcing occurs in both me...
متن کاملElectrical Contact Bounce and the Control Dynamics of Snap - Action Switch
Experimental and theoretical studies are made of a typical snap-action rocker switch, to establish the wear mechanisms in the pivoting contact. The rocker switch, used extensive~ in consumer goods, operates in the medium duty current range, (1 30 Amps). Highspeed photographic studies have shown that the main cause of wear is arcing, occurri~ during separation and bounce at the pivot contacts. T...
متن کاملTowards a Strategy of Reliable Fusion First Wall Design
Fusion first walls are subject to a large number of possible failure mechanisms, including erosion due to sputtering, arcing, blistering and vaporization and crack growth due to thermal and magnetic stresses. Each of these failure mechanisms is poorly characterized and has the potential of being severe. A strategy for designing reliably in the face of great uncertainty is discussed. Topological...
